My Successful Lecture Tour in Australia on Jing Fang
At the invitation of Royal Melbourne Institute of Technlogy (RMIT) University, I arrived in Melbourne on 30th September 2008 to begin a two weeks lecture tour in both Melbourne and Sydney. The topics for the Melbourne and Sydney weekend seminars were: Effective Use of Jing Fang for treatment of emotional disorders such as anxiety, bi-polar disorder, insomnia; gynaecological disorders; diabetes and hypertension. There were more than 150 Chinese Medicine practitioners and students attending these two weekend seminars. On 6th October in Melbourne, there was also a scheduled workshop at the Austin Hospital Education Centre on “Huang Huang Frequently used Jin Gui Yao Lue Formulas”. A total of 32 Chinese Medicine practitioners both local and interstate attended this workshop. Among the Jing Gui formulas discussed were: Xiao Jian Zhong Tang, Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang, Shen Qi Wan etc and their clinical applications. On the morning of 8th October 2008, at the invitation of RMIT University, I gave a lecture on my appreciation of the learning of Jing Fang. The above seminars and workshop were interpreted by Dr. Greta Young Jie De, a Ph.D ( Shang Han) graduate of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine .
The development of Chinese Medicine in Australia is relatively fast with both the RMIT University and University of Technology Sydney (UTS) providing a five year degree course for undergraduate Chinese Medicine students. The curriculum of the TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) course does not allocate many hours in the teaching of Shang Han Lun and Jin Gui Yao Lue and the level of Classic Literature understanding requires further upgrading. The establishment of a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) program in Australia by Dr. Greta Young Jie De since 2002 has been well supported by the Australian trained Chinese Medicine practitioners. My concept of constitution, herbal patterns and formulas pattern was very well received in Australia as the general consensus is that this is easy to comprehend and at the same time very practical.
The teaching of Classic Literature and Jing Fang applications has attracted a lot of faithful followers in Australia and many practitioners are now conversant in the usage of Jing Fang. Greta Young Jie De has compiled and translated into English a Shang Han Lun text known as “Shang Han Lun Explained: A Guided Tour of an Ancient Classic Text and its Modern Clinical Applications” and this is due to be released in November 2008 by Elsevier publishing House in Australia. The Australian Chinese Medicine journal “Lantern” has published three articles on my approach and philosophy to the use of Jing Fang and they are the January 2007 and May 2007 issues and January 2008 issue. My Australian lecture tour was well received and it is my conviction that it contributed to the further understanding of Jing Fang and its applications.
